Audit: Response time normal in 911 call death

An audit says the Denver police response time was slightly less than normal in the case of a woman who was shot and killed 13 minutes into her 911 call.

City Auditor Dennis Gallagher said Thursday the response to the April 14 call was about a minute less than the average for similar domestic disturbance calls last year.

His finding was part of an investigation that showed police response times have slowed since 2008 due to manpower shortages and departmental changes.

Kristine Kirk pleaded with a dispatcher to send officers because her husband was hallucinating after consuming marijuana-infused candy and possibly pain pills.

Police say the dispatcher failed to tell officers Richard Kirk was getting a gun from a safe. Kristine Kirk was dead when officers arrived.
