Missing Children’s Day recognized in Westminster

State officials and community members are set to gather in a park in Westminster to mark National Missing Children’s Day.

The Denver Post reports Ron Sloan, director of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, will join Kathy Sasak, executive director of the state Department of Public Safety, at Jessica Ridgeway Memorial Park at noon Sunday.

A proclamation by Gov. John Hickenlooper will be read at the gathering.

The park is named for a 10-year-old girl who was abducted on her way to school and killed in 2012. Jessica’s disappearance put Westminster and neighboring Denver suburbs on edge as police, aided by an army of volunteers, searched for her.

Sunday’s event also will honor Steamboat Springs fifth-grader Leilani Ward, who won a statewide poster contest that addressed missing children.
