Remembering the Waldo Canyon Fire as California fires burn

For Southern Coloradans the fires in California hit close to home. Images of the Waldo Canyon Fire and Black Forest Fire burned in their memory.

Next month (June) marks two years since the Waldo Canyon Fire and for Cindi Murphy it’s been a bumpy road. As Murphy tries to move forward she told KRDO it’s not always easy.

Nearly 1,200 miles away from Colorado Springs, the California wildfires are all too familiar. Murphy said it’s hard too watch the images on the news.

“I look in the morning and see what’s happening there, but it’s very hard to watch,” said Murphy, a Mountain Shadows resident.

Last summer Murphy was also rattled, this time by a wildfire much closer to home.

“It was so difficult watching Black Forest burn last year. That was harder for me than watching Mountain Shadows burn and my home go, because your heart knew everything that they were feeling,” said Murphy.

Those who have lived through the Waldo Canyon Fire said there is hope on the horizon for those in California.

“It’s been about prayer, reflection and really keeping things in perspective. I think between those three things, we’re here today,” said Shadow Mountains resident Katie White.
