Pair facing arson, child abuse charges after hash oil explosion
Two people are facing arson and child abuse charges after an explosion at a Manitou Springs apartment.
The explosion, which happened at 337 Pilot Knob Ave. #1, was reported at 4:39 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014.
The Manitou Springs Police Department says that several windows were blown out of the apartment.
There were three people inside at the time. Audrey Horowitz, 23, Michael Austin, 18, and Horowitz’s 3-year-old daughter escaped without serious injuries.
An investigation into the source of the explosion led police to the conclusion that it was the result of the manufacturing of marijuana concentrate, commonly known as hash oil.
Horowitz and Austin are facing charges for arson, reckless endangerment and child abuse. Police say they could face additional charges as the investigation continues.
As a result of the hash oil explosion, the structural integrity of the apartment has been compromised. Due to the extent of this damage, the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department has been notified to assess the structure.
