Harrison School District Two to offer free meals next year
A new program at Harrison School District Two will be implemented next fall. The district will offer free breakfast and lunch for every student.
What if something as simple as allowing every student to eat a free meal could cut back on teasing or even reduce the stigma of poverty?
“It doesn’t matter if you’re the child of the chief of police or if you’re the child of a parent who is really struggling and working three jobs,” said Christine Lyle, the Harrison School District Two public information officer.
We all know that food fuels our brains.
“It’s a benefit. I feel like our kids should have a hot breakfast, hot lunch,” said Mary Perryman, a mother and day care provider.
Many families in the district said just because they’re not on free or reduced lunches, it doesn’t mean they’re not struggling. They told KRDO that the program is a welcome surprise.
Lyle said the district’s health and nutrition department has branched out by purchasing more local and fresh food.
In order to make this program a success, the district said each parent will need to sign a form at registration.
