Gypsum dad allegedly killed by teen son identified

The Gypsum man allegedly killed by his 13-year-old son was a former technology worker who worked at Eagle County’s public works department.

Investigators say the teen shot 50-year-old Joseph Kelly, Jr. in the head with a rifle and kept the body in their home for about six days before it was discovered by authorities. The teen was arrested Monday after Kelly’s boss became suspicious after the teen called in sick for his father several days in a row.

Friends and family told the Vail Daily that Kelly, who was divorced, and his son were close and did many things together, including big game hunting.

Investigators say they are still looking into a motive.

The teen was being investigated for spraying graffiti at the time of the slaying.
