Trial begins in fatal Alamosa shooting
Prosecutors in Alamosa say a man on trial for second-degree murder admitted shooting Jose Louis Fernandez while authorities were already on their way to answer a call for help in a domestic violence case.
Deputy District Attorney Mark Loy told jurors during opening arguments Monday that Gregory Carpenter told deputies Fernandez was already dead when they arrived and admitted he shot him. Carpenter faces charges of second-degree murder, and has pleaded not guilty.
According to the Alamosa Valley Courier , defense attorney Terry Ryan told jurors that the shooting occurred after Carpenter heard a woman scream for help and he shot Fernandez to protect himself, his wife, and his children.
