Speeds reach 100 mph in Fremont County chase

A Northglenn man is facing a long list of charges after allegedly speeding away from a traffic stop and leading Fremont County sheriff’s deputies on a chase.

The incident happened on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 5:45 p.m.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says that deputies tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver on 4th Street just east of Highway 115 in Penrose.

Deputies say that their conversation with Wesley Thomas, 37 further convinced them that Thomas was under the influence. The deputies opened Thomas’ truck door and asked him to get out of the vehicle.

The deputies say that Thomas refused to get out of the truck and that when one of the deputies reached in to turn off the ignition; Thomas accelerated and sped off eastbound on 4th Street.

Deputies briefly chased Thomas before calling off the pursuit for safety reasons. The sheriff’s office estimates that Thomas was driving around 100 mph and says that he ran several stop signs.

Deputies followed Thomas from a distance. When they reached 4th Street and Apple Lane, they found that his truck had crashed into a ditch and caught fire.

Thomas was treated for minor injuries and is being held at the Fremont County Detention Center on $6,000 bond.

He is facing numerous charges, including vehicular eluding, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, driving without a valid license, driving without insurance and DUI.
