Senate approves Colorado college tuition cap

Colorado’s public colleges and universities would get a tuition cap and funding boost under a bill approved Tuesday by the state Senate.

The Senate voted 34-1 for a bill to lower maximum annual tuition hikes from 9 percent to 6 percent. The bill also adds about $100 million to higher education funding. Public colleges saw deep budget cuts during the recent recession.

The tuition measure now heads to the House. The $100 million funding boost has already been accounted for in the state budget for next year, meaning the bill is almost certain to become law.
