Palisade peach could become official state fruit

Could the Palisade peach represent Colorado as its official state fruit?

After Tuesday’s House committee meeting, it looked like a real possibility, according to KRDO NewsChannel 13’s news partners at KDVR-TV in Denver.

Colorado lawmakers met at the Capital Tuesday to vote on HB 14-1304, a proposed bill that looks to name the Palisade peach at the state’s official fruit, and committee members voted in favor of the bill 10 to one.

The bill, which was proposed by a student-led campaign, noted that peaches have been grown in and around Palisade since the 1880s, and Colorado ranks sixth in the nation for its peach production. Additionally, the proposed legislation stated that peaches account for 75 percent of fruit production statewide.

Now, the bill moves on to the House Appropriations Committee for review.
