High Fire Danger in southern Colorado today

Dry weather and gusty winds prompted the National Weather Service to issue warnings for high fire danger for most of southern Colorado Tuesday (4/1/14).

StormTracker 13 Meteorologist Rachael Plath says the counties shaded in red on the map at the top of this article are under a Red Flag Warning from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures combine to create critical fire weather conditions.

Wind gusts as high as 45 mph are expected region wide Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service warns that any fire that starts today is likely to spread very rapidly. Extreme caution is advised.
