Drone hunting, pot on ballots in municipal races

A small Colorado community is considering drone hunting, and a dozen more are looking at recreational marijuana in Tuesday’s municipal elections.

The drone-hunting measure in the rural Adams County town of Deer Trail is a tongue-in-cheek challenge to federal surveillance programs. Federal aviation authorities say it’s a crime to shoot at drones, but some people in town call the vote a novelty response to show displeasure and raise money through permits.

The Colorado Municipal League says that more than 140 Colorado towns are holding municipal elections Tuesday.

Twelve of those races involve marijuana, either allowing retail sales or taxing marijuana sales.

The town of Silverton is also voting on a measure to allow all-terrain vehicles on city streets.
