Catholics celebrate Pueblo bishop’s installation

Monsignor Stephen Berg was ordained bishop for the Diocese of Pueblo.

About 1,500 people gathered at Memorial Hall on Thursday to witness the ordination of the fifth bishop of Pueblo. Berg previously worked in Texas for the Diocese of Fort Worth.

Berg comes from a large, religious family. He’s the oldest of 10 siblings, all of whom received Catholic education in Montana.

Upon graduating, Berg became a music instructor and went on to serve as the vice president of a nursery company. It wasn’t until he was in his 40s that he entered religious vocation.

He was ordained a priest in May 1999 by his uncle, Most Reverend Joseph Charron, Bishop of Des Moines.

About 64,000 Catholics live in the Diocese of Pueblo. Berg said it’s a tremendous honor that he’s been called to work there.
