Man run over by train, his legs severed

Pueblo police say a man lost both of his legs when he was run over by a train Wednesday (2/19/14).

The incident happened near Dillon Drive and Mel Harman Drive. It was reported to police at 1:16 p.m.

Police say the engineer saw something on the tracks ahead and hit the brakes, but the train didn’t come to a stop in time. The engineer told police it became obvious it was a man lying on the tracks with his legs extended over the rails as the train got closer to hitting him.

The man has been identified by police as Michael Holmes, 22. Holmes had both legs severed and one of his arms was severely injured. Holmes was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in serious condition.
