Train sparks grass fires in Colo. Springs

A train in Colorado Springs sparked grass fires late Monday night (2/17/14).

The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to reports of grass fires caused by a train on fire shortly before midnight near I-25 and Fillmore St.

As firefighters were battling the fires, they got another report of an engine on fire on another train further south. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the engine was not actually on fire. Firefighters say the train’s wheels overheated. That sparked grass fires along the tracks.

A northbound and a southbound train were stopped on the tracks as firefighters worked to put the fires out.

CSFD Battalion Chief, Troy Branham said the train company is taking the southbound train, the one that caused the grass fires, off the tracks for maintenance.
