Slain student’s parents attend school healing rite

The parents of a girl who was fatally shot at her suburban Denver high school have attended a healing ceremony with other students there.

The Denver Post reportsMichael and Desiree Davis went to Arapahoe High School for the ceremony Friday.

Ten members of the Arapahoe Nation, the school’s namesake, also attended, burning cedar bundles and wafting the smoke over the audience to symbolize unity and strength.

The school has a longstanding relationship with the Wyoming tribe.

Claire Davis was shot on Dec. 13 and died eight days later. Investigators say the shooter was Karl Pierson, another student at the school, who then took his own life.

Investigators say Davis was a random victim and Pierson’s target was a speech and debate team coach who had disciplined him.
