Names of officers involved in shooting released

Pueblo police have released the names of two SWAT officers who are on leave after shooting and killing a man during a standoff on January 4, 2014.

Corporal Jeff Carpenter and Officer Richard Giconi are on routine administrative leave while the 10th judicial district’s critical incident team investigates the shooting.

Police say this all began when they were called to a home in the 1600 block of Prairie Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014. Officers found Alvino Hidalgo, 43, at the house. He had been shot in the chest.

Hidalgo told police he had been shot at a home in the 1600 block of Gaylord Avenue. When police went to investigate, they found Frankie Martinez, 66, unwilling to talk with investigators or come out of his home.

A short time later, police said Martinez came to the front door of the home with a weapon and pointed it at SWAT officers. Martinez was shot and killed.
