Order for cake maker to serve gay couples appealed

A conservative Christian organization has appealed a judge’s ruling against a suburban Denver baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony.

Alliance Defending Freedom filed an appeal Monday on behalf of Masterpiece Cakeshop, which was ordered by a judge in December to stop discriminating against gay couples.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint against shop owner Jack Phillips on behalf of 33-year-old Charlie Craig and 29-year-old David Mullins, who were married in Massachusetts and wanted a wedding cake to celebrate in Colorado.

The complaint says that in July 2012, Phillips turned the couple away when he found out the cake was to celebrate a gay wedding.

ADF attorney Kristen Waggoner says “forcing Americans to promote ideas against their will undermines our constitutionally protected freedom of expression.”
