Flags to fly at half-staff for fallen Air Force officer

Governor John Hickenlooper has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Capt. David Lyon on Wednesday, January 8, 2014.

Capt. Lyon died in Kabul, Afghanistan on Friday, December 27, 2013. The Air Force says a a vehicle-born improvised explosive device was detonated near his convoy. He was one of 10 killed in the attack, along with two NATO military personnel and seven Afghan forces.

Lyon was assigned to the 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado Springs. He had been serving in Afghanistan for nearly a year and was scheduled to return to Colorado in February.

A 2008 graduate of the Air Force Academy, Lyon was a three-year letter winner for the Falcons’ track and field team and a Mountain West champion in the shot put.

A funeral will take place at 1 p.m. on January 8 at New Life Church, 11025 Voyager Parkway, Colorado Springs.
