Peterson Airman killed in Afghanistan

An Airman from Peterson Air Force Base has died while serving in Afghanistan.

Capt. David I. Lyon, 28 was killed Friday when an improvised explosive device hit his convoy.

Lyon was on a year-long deployment with the 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron. He was scheduled to return to Peterson Air Force Base in February.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Capt. Lyon. The loss of life pains our team deeply. We are poised to assist his family and friends in their time of need and have support services in place to facilitate those needs,” said Col. John Shaw, 21st Space Wing commander.

Lyon was a five-year veteran of the Air Force and a 2008 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

A spokesperson for the 21st Space Wing said a memorial service is being planned to honor Lyon.
