Almost half of Royal Gorge workers let go

Our partners at The Pueblo Chieftain report that The Royal Gorge Company of Colorado laid off 24 of its 41 employees Monday (12/2/13).

The Royal Gorge has been working to reopen since it was devastated by a wildfire in the summer of 2013.

“This has been brought on by the fact that we are not going to be able to open until August instead of mid-May,” bridge manager Mike Bandera told the Chieftain. Bandera said losing the bulk of the busy summer season will mean the loss of more revenue than anticipated.

In addition to the lost revenue, Bandera says the Royal Gorge owes a $1.3 Million lease payment to Caon City.

Of the company’s 41 full-time employees, 11 managers and six security personnel have been able to keep their jobs; the remaining 24 employees were laid off.

You can read much more about the impact these layoffs are having on workers at the Royal Gorge in Tuesday’s edition of the Pueblo Chieftain.
