Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to buy local
Small-business owners throughout Colorado Springs hope to attract big crowds on Small Business Saturday.
The nationwide tradition began in 2010 as a way to encourage shoppers to buy local. Employees at Terra Verde, a shop in downtown Colorado Springs, have been preparing for months.
“It’s really nice to have an alternative event to the Black Friday, which is fun in its own right, but doesn’t really do anything to support the core businesses that give our cities vitality and personality,” owner Chris Sondermann said.
From downtown Colorado Springs, to Old Colorado City, owners and managers said buying local has many advantages.
“Here, you’re going to find more of the items that are more Colorado-style items,” Outwest manager Bill Kessler said.
The weekend means a lot to all small businesses, especially in Manitou Springs. The floods from the summer put a damper on business. So, busy roads and crowded streets were a welcome sight. They hope to see that the rest of the weekend.
“The whole town is a small business,” Tina Blea, from Olive Tap said. “So, we really appreciate it and would love everyone to come out and support us.”
