Colo investigates abuse claims at cattle facility

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a Colorado livestock operation after an animal rights group released a video showing calves being dragged by their ears and legs, lifted by their tails, kicked and thrown.

Weld County Sheriff John Cooke issued a statement Friday saying three people were issued citations. He didn’t give specifics. A spokesman didn’t immediately return a call.

Cooke says deputies are investigating the Quanah Cattle Co. facility near Kersey, 55 miles northeast of Denver. The investigation began after the group Compassion Over Killing released a video it said was taken there.

The Greeley Tribune reports the facility is owned by J.D. Heiskell & Co. of Tulare, Calif.

J.D. Heiskell said it was dismayed by the video and is cooperating with authorities. It said it would improve training.
