Veterans saluted across southern Colorado

Veterans were saluted across southern Colorado Saturday.

In Colorado Springs, the Women’s Army Corps was part of the parade through downtown.

“”When the women first entered the army, they were not members of the army.” said Cindy Anderson, the group’s president. “They served the men, as far as nurses and chore personnel. In 1943, a group of generals got together and had a meeting and that’s when it was decided that women should be part of the Army.”

The group is proud of the role women played in the military through World War II through modern warfare.

“Thanks to some of the women who served in the 70’s and especially some of the women active today, women have come a long way in the service,” said Anderson.

In Pueblo, hundreds gathered downtown for the annual salute to our military.

Veterans made up a good portion of the crowd.

“I don’t look at it as a sacrifice as much as being a responsible American Citizen,” said John Parmenter, a retired Army soldier.
