Police warn of cold weather car thefts
Tis’ the season for one crime of opportunity to spike in southern Colorado.
The Pueblo Police Department says it has investigated 38 reported car thefts so far in October, and that based on previous years, that number is likely to rise in the coming months.
Historically, the rate of car thefts in Pueblo climbs from October through February. Police say you can blame it on the colder weather. 5% of the cars reported stolen in Pueblo this month were left running and unattended.
In some cities, such as Colorado Springs, there are ordinances that ban “puffing” — leaving your car turned on and unattended for the purpose of warming it up. This means victims could face tickets, in addition to having their car stolen.
