Pets owned by terminally ill patients finding new homes

A unique center opened Saturday meant to pair pets with a good home. Health problems with their former owners force those furry friends into this situation.

Safe Place opened a pet adoption center in Manitou Springs. It’s specifically for people with terminal illnesses who want to give up their pet.

The volunteer-only organization has more then 20 pets at the facility ready for adoption.

A spokeswoman for Safe Place said is meant to help the owner as well as the pet.

“The value of being able to help with the people who is struggling with the terminal illnesses as well as the animals that are bereaved by their losses is a very important thing,” said Anne Davenport.

Safe Place serves Teller and El Paso counties.

You can call Safe Place at (719) 359-0201 or visit them at 1141 Manitou Avenue.
