Pumpkin contest draws crowd to Old Colorado City

It was a battle for the biggest and best pumpkin in Old Colorado City Saturday.

Giant pumpkins from all over Colorado and beyond were on display.

There were cash prizes for the heaviest and the prettiest.

Dee Pollman, a grower, estimated her pumpkin weighed 700 pounds.

“You get a lot of able-bodied men and you bribe them with pumpkin beer,” said Pollman, who was asked about getting help getting her pumpkin to the competition.

“They struggled to get it on the truck this year.”

Pollman said her pumpkin was grown in her backyard near I-25 and Fillmore Street and I-25 and not on a farm.

Awards were also given for squash and gourds.

The annual event drew a healthy crowd.
