James Holmes’ lawyers want car evidence thrown out

A bomb squad commander says he was so worried about the possibility of explosives in the car of the Colorado theater shooting suspect that he ran when he spotted a green laser beam, thinking it might trigger a bomb if it was interrupted.

Richard Anselmi of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department testified at a pretrial hearing Wednesday that what he saw turned out to be a laser-sighting device on a handgun resting atop James Holmes’ car. No explosives were found.

His testimony appeared to bolster prosecutors’ claims that authorities didn’t have time to ask for a search warrant before looking in the car after the shooting.

Holmes’ lawyers want evidence taken from the car thrown out because there was no warrant.
