Heavy Rescue team busy after day of storms, floods
The Colorado Springs Fire Department’s Heavy Rescue team continued its work even during calmer weather conditions Friday.
One of the team’s assignments was assisting with a potentially risky situation. A large tree tipped over onto a home, tangling power lines on the way. City workers scaled on the tree and cut it down branch by branch and chunk by chunk.
“I think these guys have a lot of guts for coming out here and doing what they’re doing like that,” onlooker Rod Peterson said.
On the ground, the Heavy Rescue team kept an eye on the workers. Team members were there as a precautionary measure to save a worker in the case that he might fall. They set up what they call a tension diagonal, a series of ropes meant to catch someone flowing down the creek.
“If he’s to fall in, that allows him to reach up, get tangled into that system and take him across to the other side of the river,” CSFD Lt. Brian Vaughan said.
City workers finished their task, and Heavy Rescue didn’t have to intervene.
