Highway 24 reopens at Cave of the Winds

Highway 24 is open again Thursday morning after closing down Wednesday night at Cave of the Winds.

But falling rocks and debris are still a problem at the Cave of the Winds entrance. We are still checking with the Colorado Department of Transportation to see if any fell on other parts of the highway.

A flash flood warning was issued until 6:30 a.m. for El Paso County.

Drivers were sitting at the Cave of the Winds exit since about 9:40 p.m. waiting out the heavy rain in hopes of getting home before the end of the night. That wasn’t the case.

As soon as the National Weather Service canceled the flash flood warning at midnight, it reissued the warning for three more hours.

A few Woodland Park residents got stuck waiting for the first time.

“We stopped in Denver to have a wonderful dinner with Jim’s son, just a light, quick bite. We didn’t want to spend a lot of time and had a ball, but we just missed the road closure,” driver Bonnie Brashear said.
