Bear sighting briefly closes elementary school

A Boulder elementary school was briefly closed while wildlife officers tracked down a small bear that was roaming a nearby cemetery.

KMGH-TV reports that Flatirons Elementary was placed on lockout at about 2:20 p.m. Friday while the officers worked on reaching the bear. A lockout means the school is closed but classes resume inside.

According to KUSA-TV, the bear was later euthanized because it had previously been tagged by wildlife officers after other sightings in residential areas.

“We had ear-tagged him a month ago after several weeks of him getting into trash in Boulder,” said Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchil.

Students and staff were allowed to leave the school after the bear was caught.
