Colo. soldier guilty in Afghanistan fuel thefts

A former U.S. Army soldier from Colorado has pleaded guilty for her role in stealing fuel from a military base in Afghanistan that cost the federal government more than $1.5 million.

Specialist Stephanie Charboneau of Fountain pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Colorado to conspiracy to commit bribery and one substantive count of bribery. Prosecutors say she forged documents to facilitate the theft of fuel from trucks departing from Forward Operating Base Fenty near Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

Prosecutors say Charboneau received payments from a representative from a trucking company in exchange for facilitating the thefts. She is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 12.

Four people have pleaded guilty in the case.
