Adams County man dies of West Nile virus

Health officials say a 53-year-old man from Adams County is the first confirmed fatal case of West Nile virus in the Denver metro area this year.

The Tri-County Health Department said Thursday the man died Aug. 27. The first West Nile virus death in Colorado this year happened on Aug. 25 in Weld County. The department says there have been 96 human cases of West Nile in the state this year.

Health officials say the symptoms of West Nile virus appear 3 to 14 days after exposure and include fever, body aches, neck stiffness, and disorientation. There is no human-to-human transmission of the virus.
