Federal help for cleaning up Arkansas River
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is offering to help remove safety hazards from sections of the Arkansas River.
Canon City Water Superintendent Bob Hartzman says debris is clogging the river bank.
According to the Canon City Daily Record, the agency has agreed to write a grant to help remove a mile of debris from a wildfire burn area. The grant would cover 75 percent of the yet-to-be-determined cost and the city’s 25-percent match would come from its water fund.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Friends of the Arkansas River have been working for several months to find a way to clean up the river. Officials are hoping to get more grant money to help clean up another six miles of the river.
