Volunteers Help Mitigate Waldo Canyon’s Burn Scar

Most people would spend their days off sleeping in, traveling or relaxing.

But for some people they spend those coveted days around the Waldo Canyon Burn Scar to make it a safer place to live.

Michael McCarty is an insurance agent, he feels it’s his duty to help when people are in need.

“To suffer a loss in a flood or a fire is devastating, I have never felt that personally but I know that people who have would appreciate somebody to lend to a hand.”

The volunteers are part of the Coalition for the Upper South Platte.

The group helps mitigate the Waldo Canyon Burn Scar.

Volunteers make sand and mud bag walls, rake dirt, plant seeds and clean up areas around Waldo.

Even though it’s Jon Stricker’s day off, he would rather be doing nothing else.

“When you have a chance to get away from work and give back to the community and really help with the healing process in the community, they need it right now.”

Chanc DuMond’s house is barricaded with sand bagssince he is around the Waldo Canyon Burn Scar, but he is grateful for the group’s help.

“Anything to keep that water from entering into the basement we are willing to help anyone we can.”

Even though the job is far from over.

Volunteers will continue to dig, build,and repair areas around the burn scar.
