Colo. begins controversial teacher-grading system
Colorado schools are bracing for statewide implementation this fall of a controversial teacher-grading system.
The grading plan will sort educators from “highly effective” to “ineffective,” based 50 percent on student test scores. Teachers with too many consecutive low ratings could lose tenure.
Colorado adopted the teacher-rating plan three years ago after a vigorous debate in the state Legislature. It took several years for state education officials to test the grading system, and the 2013-14 school year is the first for the grading system to be used in all 178 Colorado school districts.
