Colo panel offers steps to reduce veteran suicides

A panel of veterans and mental health professionals convened by Colorado Sen. Michael Bennett has suggested 11 steps to curb suicides among veterans.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports the recommendations include screening recruits for mental health issues before they enlist and allowing military personnel to enroll in the Veterans Affairs system before they’re discharged.

Bennet says many families have told him they weren’t prepared to help loved ones make the transition from military to civilian life.

A February study by the VA found that 22 veterans commit suicide every day nationwide. It said 937 veterans committed suicide in Colorado in the past five years.
