From fire to floods

People around the Waldo Canyon Fire burn area have gone from fearing fire to fearing floods with the heavy rainfall over the area over the past couple days, with more rain expected to start the week. Business owners arrived at work Monday morning to the sight of mud slides across the street from there doors.

Lono Hoala who owns a business in Cascade said, “We just went through being out of business for 10 days. If we add a flood on top of that it would be very tough for us.”

Hoala told KRDO Newschannel 13 that when he looked into purchasing flood insurance he was told no. “I can’t get flood insurance I tried and the government has stopped issuing flood insurance for this area, I guess for this kinda risk.”

The Colorado Department of Transportation and the U.S. Forest Service had crews on Highway 24 and along the hillsides Monday morning working on areas that had erosion, in preparation for more heavy rain.
