Pet food plant closing in Pueblo

Food giant Mars Inc. is closing its 40-worker Mars Petcare pet food plant at the Pueblo Airport Industrial Park.

The plant opened in 1992, lured in part by a $1.6 million jobs incentives package from the city of Pueblo.

According to the Pueblo Chieftain, Mars executives say the company will also close a 121-worker plant in Joplin, Mo., because it has excess production capacity and there is reduced demand for pet food in the central and western regions of the country.
