New volunteer group helps Caon City police

A volunteer intern program by Caon City police exposes people to police work and frees officers for more important duties.

Police Chief Paul Schultz said the volunteers include four senior citizens, three college students, a retired police chief from Minnesota and a mother and daughter from Pueblo West.

Schultz said the volunteers work an average of 16 hours a week, serving in several departments on projects that free two officers to patrol or handle more important responsibilities.

“I don’t know if most police departments have this to the extent that we do,” said Schultz. “I think we have a pretty high-functioning program.”

One of the volunteers is Lauren Trojanovich, 20, a student at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs who’s seeking a career in law enforcement.

“I’m looking to go into more of the investigations aspect,” she said. “Being able to see all of the different parts of the police department really helps me with (choosing) what I want to do,” she said.
