No firework sales for July 4th; Public displays are only option

Thursday is the Fourth of July, and to clarify for those wondering, people cannot light fireworks in Colorado Springs or Pueblo. There will be public displays on July 4, but that is the only option.

There are stacks of firecrackers at Affordable Flags and Fireworks in El Paso County, but if you live in Colorado they are not for you, because residents cannot buy them. Co-owner Judy Ilett has turned a lot of people away.

“It is a little frustrating for us and for them. Most people understand. I think a lot of people are aware of the fire ban at this time,” said Ilett.

She can sell to people living out of state, but they need a driver’s license and must sign an affidavit.

There are other things you can buy, like poppers, or other items you don’t light.

“It is financially devastating. Three years in a row now,” said Ilett.

There will be public fireworks displays, like at the Pueblo Riverwalk and Memorial Park in Colorado Springs.

If you are caught lighting fireworks you could be fined up to $500, and spend up to 90 days in jail.
