Commerce City woman convicted in grandson’s death

A Commerce City woman charged in the death of her 4-year-old grandson has been acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of a lesser charge.

Jurors in Brighton convicted Becky Trujillo on Friday of a criminally negligent child abuse charge in the death of Gabriel Trujillo in February 2012.

An autopsy found he died from head and neck injuries. Trujillo said he had fallen from a chair.

Her attorneys had suggested Gabriel may have had an undetected hematoma, which is a tumor-like mass of blood outside blood vessels, that may have led to the boy’s brain damage.

Trujillo was the boy’s legal guardian.
