No charge for deputy, prosecutor in fatal shooting

No charges will be filed against a Grand County sheriff’s deputy and his prosecutor wife after they they shot an intruder who died from his wounds.

The district attorney for Jefferson County announced the decision Thursday after an investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The DA says John and Heather Stein both shot 32-year-old Joshua Stevens outside their Hot Sulphur Springs home on April 1 after Stevens forced his way into the home and fought with John Stein.

The DA says an autopsy determined Stevens died from the shots fired by John Stein, a Grand County sheriff’s lieutenant.

Heather Stein is a prosecutor for the 14th Judicial District, which includes Grand County.

Jefferson County DA Peter Weir reviewed the CBI investigation at the request of 14th District officials.
