Theater shooting suspect to get mental evaluation
Colorado theater shooting suspect James Holmes is headed for the state mental hospital for an evaluation.
A judge ordered the exam after accepting Holmes’ plea of not guilty by reason of insanity Tuesday.
It’s unclear when the exam will begin or how long it will take. Officials at the state hospital in Pueblo first want to review the evidence in the case, which prosecutors say approaches 40,000 pages.
Holmes is charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. He’s accused of killing 12 people and injuring 70 in a suburban Denver theater in July.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
The findings of the evaluation will become evidence in Homes’ trial, but they’re not the final word on whether he was legally insane. Jurors will determine that.
