Diet soda as bad for teeth as meth addiction, study says

Diet soda can be as damaging to teeth as a meth or cocaine addiction, according to a new study.

KRDO NEWSCHANNEL 13 spoke with a local expert, and he said he thinks the study is accurate.

“Soda in general has a very low pH, meaning it’s really acidic, and on top of that, it has really high sugar content,” said Dr. Travis Edwards, of Comfort Dental. “So those two factors combined really wreck havoc on the enamel of your teeth.”

Edwards said the occasional soda isn’t too bad. The problem comes with drinking one or more sodas a day. And although diet soda may have no sugar or less sugar, it’s still damaging.

“That exposure of the acids to the teeth will start to cause a loss of the mineral content,” Edwards said.

And Edwards said damage of a “soda mouth” and a “meth mouth,” are related.

“A large part of that is because most people who are using methamphetamines will experience dry mouth and they try and compensate for that by drinking a lot of soda,” he said.
