Sheriffs fundraise for lawsuit against state

It was standing room only for 815 people who paid $5 each to attend a fundraiser supporting a lawsuit against the State of Colorado at the Freedom Financial Expo Center.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa co-hosted the event with Weld County Sheriff John Cooke and Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith.

On May 17 th , 55 of the 62 Colorado County Sheriffs along with several other organizations and individuals filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of gun control bills passed by the Colorado Legislature this past session.

“It will do nothing to stop criminals from getting guns. We have these laws, let’s focus on those and make those penalties stiffer, not punish law abiding citizens and that’s what these laws do,” Sheriff Maketa said.

The Independence Institute out of Denver is taking the case pro-bono, but the money raised will go towards renting event space and filing fees.
