People come together for National Day of Prayer

Religious leaders came together with the community to commemorate National Prayer Day on Thursday on the steps of Colorado Springs’ City Hall.

The event kicked off with live music from Every Home for Christ Prayer Corps. Leaders from different denominations offered prayers for families, the city and the country.

Chaplain Ric Brown prayed for U.S. military personnel serving overseas. Brown is stationed at Fort Carson and is expected to deploy to Afghanistan this summer. He said the focus of today isn’t on religious affiliation, it’s about coming together as a community.

“Over the years it has become a focus on faith in general, which is a great foundation for people to have,” said Brown. “Typically a great group of people come together to lift up the nation with prayer based on their own beliefs.”

Rep.Doug Lamborn’s wife read the event’s proclamation.

The first continental congress called for National Day of Prayer in 1775. President Harry Truman signed the day into law in 1952.
