Curtain call at Wasson High: Bye, Bye T-Birds

It’s curtain call at Wasson High. Saturday night, student performed in the final musical at the D-11 school.

No one missed the irony that the last show for the T-Birds was Bye, Bye Birdie.

“When we found out Wasson was really going to close, people came to me and said, ‘Renee, did you have a clue? Why pick Bye, Bye Birdie?'” said Wasson choral director Renee Tabet. “And I said, ‘This was not in the cards. I had no premonition.'”

Cast members said the pending closure has been hard to deal with. This is the last year for students.

“It’s been so tough to walk these halls and to know it’s not going to be like this for me next year or anyone ever again,” said cast member Cody Windle, a junior.

But students said with the heartache of losing their school came inspiration to do their best work.

“We’ve decided that instead of mourning Wasson closing, we’re going to go out with a celebration,” said senior Victoria Nedd. “I think that it was more difficult to put on a good musical because of the circumstances, but I think we exceeded it and went beyond the expectations.

The musical Bye, Bye Birdie and Wasson High are almost the same age– both more than 50 years old. Despite the history, District 11 decided to close the school because of declining enrollment.
