U.S. 50 open in Avondale after series of crashes

A chain reaction of crashes forced both directions of U.S. 50 to close at mile marker 330 in Avondale for an hour and a half Tuesday afternoon.

The first crash occurred when the driver of a white Mitsubishi crossed the median onto oncoming traffic on U.S. 50 in Avondale. The Mitsubishi crashed head-on into a green SUV.

The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Two children in the SUV were also taken to the hospital as a precaution. The driver and passenger of the Mitsubishi were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Nearby, the driver of a white Ford Expedition stopped to help with the first crash. Another car then hit the Expedition, causing it to spin and causing three other vehicles to crash. There were no serious injuries in the second series of crashes.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that visibility was poor in that area and the roads were slick. They are considering weather a factor in the crashes.
