Springs boy needs new set of wheels

A Colorado Springs boy is trying to win a new set of wheels. Taylor Grout, a fourth-grader at Audubon Elementary, has Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy and is wheelchair bound.

“He’s a 10-year-old and he has a 10-year-old’s mind and he wants to get out there and do things, ” said Taylor’s stepfather Chris Knapp. But Taylor’s family doesn’t have a wheelchair-accessible car. Instead, Taylor’s mother, Rhiannon Grout, sets Taylor in a car seat, a situation which is getting more difficult as Taylor gets bigger.

He’s outgrowing his car seat and trips to visit his doctor in Denver are becoming more challenging. “He loves to get around and we just want to give him that ability,” Knapp said.

The family recently stumbled upon a national contest giving away three wheelchair-accessible vans for National Mobility Awareness Month which is in May.

All they need to win is online votes. Grout is hoping the community will step forward to help support them. “All we’re asking for is your support in voting for Taylor, ” Grout said.
